How to Speak AI

You are the captain. Here are your three controls.

Control 1: The Prompt

The #1 Rookie Mistake: Treating AI like Google

Google:

You type keywords ("marketing plan template") to find something.

AI:

You type instructions ("Write a marketing plan for my bakery") to create something.

The Fix: Stop typing keywords. Start typing full sentences, like you're emailing a human.

Once you make that mental shift, you just need to remember three letters:

The RTC Formula

R
Role — Who is the AI? Give it an identity.
T
Task — What do you want it to do? Be specific.
C
Context — What constraints or background info does it need?

In the "Engineered" example below, look for how we applied RTC:

  • Role: "Act as a professional communication coach."
  • Task: "Write a professional email requesting a salary adjustment."
  • Context: "I've been in this role for 18 months... led the Q3 product launch..."

Your Prompt

Write me an email asking for a raise.

AI Output

Subject: Raise Request Hi, I would like to request a raise. I have been working hard and I think I deserve more money. Please let me know. Thanks, [Name]

Control 2: The Context Window

AI has a "Goldfish Memory." It can only hold so much information at once. Every message you send—and every response it gives—fills up this limited space.

In the simulation below, watch the Context Meter fill up. Once it hits 100%, notice how the oldest facts (like your name) physically disappear to make room for new chat bubbles.

🧠Context Window Simulation

What Happens When AI Runs Out of Memory?

AI can only "remember" so much at once. Watch what happens when the context window fills up.

Facts we'll tell the AI:

name:Alex
pet:Buddy
city:Tokyo
food:Pizza

The Fix

If you feel the AI forgetting earlier details, just say: "Summarize what we've discussed so far." This pulls those lost details back into the active memory.

Control 3: Temperature

Temperature controls creativity vs. precision. Low temperature = safe, predictable answers. High temperature = wild, surprising ones.

Most free apps (like ChatGPT) don't have this slider.

You have to simulate it using words:

Low: "Be precise, factual, concise."
High: "Be creative, brainstorming, wild."
🧊 Precise0.7🔥 Creative

Prompt

"Why is the sky blue?"

AI Response

Picture sunlight as a rainbow-colored bowling ball hitting pins made of air molecules. The blue pins go flying everywhere while the red ones barely budge. That chaos of blue? That's your sky!

The Iteration Mindset

Don't expect perfection on the first try. AI is a collaborator, not a vending machine.

1
The First Draft — Usually 80% good, 20% generic.
2
The Magic — Happens in the follow-up: "Make it shorter", "Too formal", "Add more examples".

Pro Tip: Staring at a blank page? Just type: "Ask me 5 questions to help me write this." Let the AI prompt you.
